Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Why no love for Brent from Rhino?

With all the speculation about the next release, i find it interesting that the Rhino releases have for the most part steered quite clear of the Brent era. Only RT1-1 has Brent on the keys unless I am missing something.

12-31-76 - Cow palace
2-19-71 - 3ftv and a remastered Vault Box
RT1-1 - Fall '79
RT1-2 - Fall '77
RT1-3 - Summer '71
Rockin' the Cradle - Egypt '78
RT1-4 - Winterland '78
Winterland '73 box
RT2-1 - MSG '90
To Terrapin - Hartford '77
RT2-2 Winter '68
and now something from '74

12 releases and only one Brent Era? Perhaps they don't like PatKelley(PA) very much. I love the idea of a '74 release but wouldn't mind seeing an '80s one come up soon. Fall '84? May '81? Acoustic RT from 80-81?

The series is just getting started and if you are getting started you start with Constanten and Pigpen. More early Dead the better.

there hasn't been a single TC release from rhino and of the 12 releases only 3 feature Pig. Keith leads with 8 and Vince/Bruce with one.

Did the band not switch to recording shows on Cassettes during the early 80's for a number of years. The DP from Hartford 83 is mastered off the original cassettes. Maybe Rhino is stearing clear of these type of recordings, holding out for Master Reels, higher quality stuff...

i would love to see more videos from the brent era. there must be lots of high quality multi-camera footage from this time- and probably lots of multi-track audio from the 89/90 "without a net" shows. jerry was particularly animated and expressive at that time as well (summer 89 seems like the peak of "rock star jerry") so it would make for a fun watch. so, yeah, that's my vote for brent era rhino action.

For some reason i have decided that you are the quintessential brent era fan. I mean this as a compliment as i have grown to trust your judgement on this period ike I trust WT on the Pig era (minus the beginning of '72) and Cliff and Arb for most things up to '81. Lobster is also good for 80s and 90s recs.

Wow what a suck up i have become!! Half way between miami and atlanta tonight i started shivering from a fever, clearly it has messed with my head. Trust WT? For the record the 1ftv version of Blues for Allah goes quite nicely with these kind of shakes.

I suspect all the people who noticed me bent over and shaking were probably thrilled with the idea that someone who looks like a swine flu case was sitting in their row...... Its not, kid had strep over the weekend, the likely culprit.

I am something of a Brent aficionado. I think it has something to do with the fact that the first GD music I heard was tapes that my Dad had from shows he went to in the early 80s. For me, that's the "standard" GD. His first show was in '72, but he briefly was into collecting tapes in the 80s.

Hope you're feeling better. I actually think I had a touch of swine flu last week. It sucked.

Let me ask you this- If you've heard any of the recent shows from the Dead, which would you suggest?

thanks.

I am the wrong person to ask about The Dead. I haven't listened to a single show with the exception of the Penn State one from the fall. I figure there is so much Grateful Dead/Jerry Band that I need to experience still, perhaps I will get around to The Dead in a few years. Others seem to think the shows got better as the tour moved on and i have no reason to doubt them. I would probably check out a Branford one if I were to listen.

Presently I have been grooving at work to Jerry and Merl, mostly stuff that Tigerbolt posted here years ago and that Wineland sent me. In my new office they think I am some kind of jazz expert with all these crazy versions of All Blues and My Funny Valentine coming from my computer.

you can also view it as only two releases post 78...though I am more surprised with the lack of the 80's than 90's...

it is interesting since I thought that there would have been a flood of 80's material released by now...

Well? Let's poll the audience.

What percentage of your GD listening time is spent in the Brent era?

My answer?

10%

About 2%. Maybe Rhino sells more releases of 70's shows than later ones; I'm sure the bottom line is their only concern, not fan's wishes.

I like what they have been putting out,( yes I would rather have full shows of some of this ) , but I too think some eras get overlooked , both in the "vault,' and "Road Trips" issues . I know there is not much available for 67, but boy that would be great ! The 80's need more love, for sure , but the RTs format would be perfect for some of the late , post Bruce, time . There is some interesting stuff buried in there, ... and some stinky stuff that could kindly be left out .
Now sign me up for more 74 , I will never have a problem with that ! But all Dead eras have there charms and interest .

1966-71 50%
1972-78 30%
1979-90 19.8%
1991-95 0.2%

I actually started going to shows in the Brent era and used to favor it, but over time my listening tastes evolved to a point where I really favor the early years. I still enjoy the Mydland years, I just prefer the older stuff.

hey, also - I don't remember who it was, but someone on this very forum in the last few weeks said they'd read or heard an interview with David Lemieaux (sp?) where he said that the early 80's were sorely UNDER-represented in the Vault. Apparently a lot of those tapes walked off ...

Also I think the guy made a good point about media: those shows were mostly recorded on cassette and probably don;t have anywhere near the quality of either the earlier reels or the later digital recordings.

Here it is again.

Lemieux describes the joy of working in the spartan,
climate-controlled chill of the Vault, surrounded by
15,000 audio tapes and 2,500 videotapes. Recordings date back to three
shows in 1967; there are 20 taped concerts from
the following year. Almost everything from 1970 is missing, but most
tapes from 1972 to 1974 are on hand. The Vault
contains 70 per cent of recordings from 1976 to 1978; 40 per cent from
1979-82, most from 1985-86, but only 30 per
cent from 1987. The final touring years, 1988 to 1995, are well
documented. Missing tapes were given away or taken and
not returned. The Dead were not always protective of their musical
history.

This is an interview from 2001 so there may be more that has been "found" since then.

2500 video tapes ?!?! Either they are poor quality or Rhino are really wasting an opportunity.

For sure. I actually enjoy most of the sometimes shaky camera audience shot stuff out there, {something about actually seeing them performing the stuff is very cool for me} and it's hard to believe the stuff in the vault is much worse.
Possibly nothing is completely worth releasing in its entirety but if so why not a road trips video version release of the best stuff out there?

When I just getting into the dead the first cd I borrowed from a friend was "without a net", I was hooked after that. The eyes of the world to this day still gives me chills. At the time I thought the Brent era was the best, so for a number of years it was probably around 65%.

Now, ten years later it makes up probably 30% of what I listen to. I don't see it increasing anytime in the near future.

40-50% because that was the era when I attended the most shows. I can (and do) appreciate shows from the '60s and '70s on a lot of different levels, but my response to the '80s sound is hardwired. It's like sense memory -- those neural pathways have some deep and permanent grooves.

I'd say it's about 40% Brent for me - but I am a child of 1979, and have a lot of the shows that I went to in regular rotation ...

other than the sad lacking of Darkstars in the 80's, I spend a good 40% of my listening there. Well, there is the 87Miami Star. Spent today listening to a GRATE 1/20/79 show and them the 6/15/85 Greek show...yeah, the 80's need more RhinoLuv! MORE BRENT!!

I probably spend about 40% of my listening in the 80s. I think brent was a wonderfull keyboardist for the band, IMO he brought a lot of livelyness and helped steer the music in a new exciting direction, and the grateful dead needed that after being "at it" for such a long time already. to be honest i think the deads music would have grown boring and would have started to seem pretty routine had he not come along. BUT, the 80's do lack the monsterous mind blowing jams of the early days. you all know what im talking about. you just wont here a Dark Star > Eyes of the World > China Doll (POP QUESTION: which show is it from?) from the 1980's like you would from an earlier show.
